Things to do on July 4th

For those who may not have anything properly planned, there are always last minute things to do locally or at home. let's explore some alternatives.

If you are lucky enough to have a swimming pool at your house, then problem solved. Nothing says summer fun on the Fourth of July like a good old fashioned pool party, complete with grilled food, drinks, and good times.

If you have a roomy back yard and enough children or participants, then perhaps a sack race. You can set up an old fashioned game of horseshoes if you have them. Maybe a game of frisbee or some touch football? Throwing the whiffle ball around and hitting a bit can be fun as well.

Most towns and villages have parades or picnics on major patriotic holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Call your local town hall and see if anything is scheduled.  There might be historical reenactments of Revolutionary War events, or even a while fair built around such events, complete with vendor booths and food pavilions.

Go to a baseball game.  You might have to plan this one ahead of time.  While this one will cost some money, it is a potential fun time for the family.  As a cheaper alternative, see if there are any local softball or even minor league baseball games scheduled near your area.  Minor league tickets are very inexpensive.  A local softball game at a field is free to attend.  If you are a team member then you get to play ball as well.

Many places are surrounded by woody areas containing hiking trails and campgrounds.  Camping is a great way to have a budget friendly getaway, especially if it is near a public body of water where you can also fish or swim.  Hiking and biking trails are great ways to get out and enjoy the fresh summer air on July 4th.

While trips to the shore are not as budget friendly as they once were, those who live close by can perhaps drive down for a few hours or the day to enjoy the sights and sounds of the seashore.  There might be boat and water shows, and many seaside entertainment areas have boardwalks full of fun, food, and games as well as a possible aquarium to visit and enjoy.
